Mineral SPF vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What the Research Actually Says

If you optimized only one step of your skincare ritual for the next thirty years, it would not be your serum or your retinol. It would be your daily SPF. Dermatological research is unusually consistent on this point: chronic ultraviolet exposure drives up to ninety percent of visible skin aging — the fine lines, the pigmentation, the loss of dermal density that we colloquially call getting older.

Two filter families, two mechanisms

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — inorganic minerals that sit on the surface of the skin and both reflect and absorb UV radiation. Chemical sunscreens use organic filters such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate, which absorb UV energy and dissipate it as heat within the skin itself. Both categories reduce erythema. They do not, however, behave identically on aging skin.

Why we formulated with zinc oxide

Zinc oxide is the only single filter that offers true broad-spectrum coverage — UVB, UVA-II, and UVA-I — without a co-filter stack. It is photostable, meaning it does not degrade in the presence of light. It is non-irritating to compromised barriers, which matters for skin already using peptides, retinoids, or acids. And, critically for a longevity brand, it does not generate the reactive oxygen species that some organic filters produce as they metabolize UV energy.

The best sunscreen is the one you wear every day. The best sunscreen for skin longevity is the one that protects without inflaming.

The white-cast problem, solved

The classic objection to mineral SPF is the ghostly cast it leaves on the skin. That was a formulation problem, not a chemistry one. Modern mineral SPF 40 uses uncoated zinc oxide dispersed in a lipid-compatible vehicle, tinted with iron oxides that also block visible light and HEV — the blue light implicated in melasma and pigment persistence. The result is a veil, not a mask.

Where mineral SPF fits in the ritual

In the Selene ritual, mineral SPF 40 is the final morning step. It sits over the serum, seals the barrier, and stands guard against the single greatest driver of premature aging. Applied daily — including on overcast days, including indoors near windows — it is the compounding investment your skin makes in itself.
